S&J UK Employees Take On 2016 Yorkshire Half Marathon

Eight employees from Eclipse Magnetics and S&J UK took to the hills on Sunday 10th April, running the Yorkshire Half Marathon for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, as TEAM S&J.

For those of you who know Sheffield, it’s a city of hills!  And when it comes to the Yorkshire Half Marathon, it really is all about hills!  This was without doubt a considerable challenge to take on by Team S&J.  For some of the team this was their first ever half marathon, for others who were more seasoned runners, they knew the challenge of the Yorkshire Half was not to be taken lightly!

But what a day!  A beautiful spring morning, blue skies & sun shining, the weather conditions really were kind!  Congregating in the city centre, there was a great atmosphere, sense of occasion and intrepidation with an underlying strong fragrance of deep heat!

As 09:30 approached, good luck wishes were said, warm-up exercises completed and 7,000 runners took to their starting places along Arundel Gate, with announcements made and encouragement offered the gun sounded and runners were off!  With a city-centre start and finish, the event boasts a super scenic challenging route with stunning views of the Peak District for those who conquer the climb to Ringinglow – that’s a 5-mile uphill climb!

Amazing crowds, well-wishes, water givers, live bands and jelly babies, they all helped get the runners around, so too did the other competitors, Group HR Manager, Katie Weller said “at one point I was running with the Honey Monster – in jeans and full furry head, I set myself a personal challenge not to be beaten by the honey monster (not sure whether I did or didn’t as it all became a bit of a blur)”!  Above all however was the knowledge that Team S&J were making a difference, so no matter how hard the hills were or the mental struggle each one of the runners faced, fundamental to Team S&J runners was the knowledge that in running the Yorkshire Half they were raising critical funds for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.

As Divisional MD Steve White said: “Weston Park Hospital is an exceptional landmark in our beloved steel city, and it is crucial to the community and the surrounding area. Our team will be fundraising for those that we have lost, for those that continue to fight, and for those who care for and support people whose lives have been affected by cancer.”  As one of only four dedicated cancer hospitals in England, Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity supports the hospital by funding pioneering cancer research and helping to improve cancer treatments and care for patients from Sheffield, all of South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire, North Derbyshire and beyond.

All 8 runners of Team S&J conquered the Yorkshire Half and what a fantastic effort, not only a personal achievement for all but over £1500 raised for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity!  AWESOME!

Run in the Park, S&J Group

It was a grey and rather bleak start to a Sunday, with the air full of mizzle and a degree of apprehension amongst 18 S&J Group employees.  As one of those 18 employees, I had gone to bed worried that I would be running in a heat wave, but as I opened the curtains it looked more like running in the rain!

And so on that grey morning, 18 apprehensive employees made their way to Graves Park in Sheffield.  And as the Group employees congregated, apprehension began to be over taken by a great team spirit and the Mighty Fine Team S&J was well and truly ready to show the 2015 Run in the Park 10K what they were made of!

The Team had come together to help raise funds for Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield, which plays a significant part in the Sheffield local community and beyond, and is one of only four hospitals in England dedicated exclusively to cancer treatment.  Running in memory of Lee Wells, former MD of the UK Tools and Magnetics operations, and for all employees, colleagues, family and friends who have been affected by cancer at some time in their life and received treatment / support from Weston Park – the Team wanted to make a difference, with the ethos, “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much” (Helen Keller).

So as 11:00 am approached the runners made their way to the starting line and shortly after the starting gun was fired.  The team was off….

Have you ever heard the saying, Sheffield, a city built on 7 hills?  Well I am pretty sure those 7 hills were in Graves Park alone!  And from a wet start to the day, the sun came out and the heat burnt through the clouds, I think it would be fair to say that the majority of runners wished for the rain to return and offer at least some relief to the heat, nothing could provide relief to those hills!

But on the team went, determined to show the run what they were made of, cheered on by a number of really encouraging Group supporters, great crowds, an inspiring atmosphere and beautiful park surroundings, even with those Sheffield hills!

As the first lap was completed the runners knew what lay ahead and ran on.  Tiredness was setting in, but we all kept our heads held high, maybe the thought of an extra-large Sunday dinner, a cold pint, sense of achievement helped us going, but more than that, I think being part of a team, making a difference, raising funds for a hospital that in some way had touched us all, got us all across that finishing line.

With the clock on 53.34 our first team member, George Stewart from S&J Warehouse, crossed the finishing line – well done George.  Followed quickly by Elise Nicholson with a time of 53.47 and Gaz Hill 55.46.  What a fantastic effort by everyone, we certainly stood up to our name and showed the run what we were made of, ‘The Mighty Fine Team S&J’:

As a Team we raised over £2000, that’s a tremendous effort, and with the ethos that we have followed, “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much”.  Runners be Proud, Supporters Thank You.  And for anyone who would still like to contribute, please see our just giving page,

Bowers Announces Sylvac-Scan Measuring Machines

As exclusive UK reseller for Sylvac, Bowers Group is pleased to announce that following Sylvac’s recent acquisition of the TESA-Scan division from Hexagon Group, Bowers’ Optical Measuring arm, Baty International, will now be handling sales and support for this important product line.

The Scan products complement Baty’s existing range of Optical Measuring instruments by offering an ideal solution for the measurement of turned parts:

The Scan 52 is the first horizontal machine specially designed for workshop measurement close to the machine tool. The concept is to measure the parts in the same position as they are machined. The intuitive software with its one-click measure function is perfect for multiple users

The Scan 25/50 are the entry level vertical machines for measurement of smaller cylindrical parts. These models feature an integrated projector on the left side of the machine, allowing the operator to preview the profile image. With the work piece secured, the machine moves the work piece through the optical path whilst scanning the profile. The open design of these machines makes them easily and quickly accessible by the operator

The Scan 50 CE Plus / Plus machines offer a motorised axis used to incline the work piece to the helix angle of the thread, thus allowing a true projected image of the thread form. This unique and exclusive Sylvac slewing system allows the operator to measure many more features on threads, such as minor diameter and root detail, on ball screws for example

All models in the Scan range are available with a rotating part axis for dynamic measurement such as concentricity and non-symmetrical features

Interested parties can submit an application study request to Bowers Group and, of course, are invited to get a full demonstration of the new Scan instruments at our impressive new demonstration suite at Bowers headquarters in Camberley.

Eclipse Magnetics Achieves ISO14001 Environmental Accreditation

World leaders in magnetic technology, Eclipse Magnetics, is proud to announce its achievement of ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management Standard.  The award follows months of rigorous examination of Eclipse’s procedures and performance relating to environmental issues such as waste minimisation and energy conservation.  ISO 14001:2004 is, therefore, a testament to the company’s environmentally friendly philosophy and dedication to environmental responsibility.

Managing Director John Dargavel said: “We are delighted to attain the ISO 14001 certification.  As a company we are fully aware of our environmental responsibility and we decided that the ISO standard would be the ideal way to showcase and benchmark our actions.  I’d like to thank our Quality Manager, Nick Parlett, and his team and everyone at Eclipse for embracing the environmental ethic.”

The ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management Standard sets out the criteria for an environmental management system, mapping out a framework that a company or organisation can follow to set up an effective environmental management system.  Using ISO 14001:2004 provides assurance to company management and employees, as well as external stakeholders, that environmental impact is being measured and improved.

Magnetic Filter from Eclipse Saves Vallourec £1000 per Week

Eclipse Magnetics have recently supplied a leading manufacturer of premium tubular solutions, Vallourec, with a fully automated magnetic filter. The Double Automag AM6 magnetic filter has significantly improved Vallourec’s production of steel pipe, reducing their maintenance time to zero and saving them £1000 per week in the process.

Due to the tight tolerances required by the off shore industry, it is imperative that the quality of the pipes is 100%. However, Vallourec were experiencing problems with their quality testing procedure when water contamination affected their ultrasound readings.

Contamination was causing slow cycle times due to re-scanning, and causing a build up around the axles on the heads which rotate the pipe line, making them to seize up. The process previously required the use of a sand filter, 2 bag filters and hydrocyclones, which needed cleaning and changing twice in every shift. Changing this equipment when it became clogged with contamination caused the pressure to drop constantly, resulting in the line coming to a stop so that maintenance could be carried out. To put this into perspective, downtime costs the plant £60 per second.

Vallourec were, therefore, faced with the challenge of retaining sufficient water quality for the process by recycling the water. They opted for a fresh mains water supply, which resulted in the use of approximately 1000 cubic metres of water, at a cost of over £1000 per week. However, the continuous stopping and starting of the process for maintenance due to contamination caused air bubbles, which were also a problem.

The magnetic filter supplied by Eclipse successfully removes contamination in the water. This has eliminated the possibility of a good product being rejected and allowed them to use recycled water, saving a significant amount of maintenance time and money.

Vallourec’s Principle Engineer Kenneth McRae commented “We are delighted with the Automag installation; it’s solved all the problems we were having previously with downtime and maintenance costs. The filter means that we are able to use recycled water, which is saving us £1000 per week!”

Based in Glasgow, Vallourec designs, develops, and manufactures a comprehensive range of products for the offshore oil and gas industry, including steel pipes to be used as drill collars. The plant processes 3500 units of carbon steel pipe per week, which include pipes of anything from 4” to 16” in width, and up to 14.7 metres long.

The Double Automag AM6 magnetic filter from Eclipse Magnetics is a fully automated unit ideal for 24/7 machining operations such as this. With high contamination collection capacity and an ability to handle high flow rates, Automag is widely used on high volume production lines, and its double feature means that there is always a failsafe back up.
